Performing “Earthrise”
Performing Earthrise, the viola concerto I commissioned from Liam Bates, at the Clonmel Junction Arts Festival was a truly memorable experience. Set in the stunning Franciscan Friary, with its magnificent Harry Clarke stained glass windows casting vibrant hues across the space, the performance was nothing short of magical. The atmosphere created by the interplay of light and music added a transcendent quality to the evening.
Earthrise is an extraordinary addition to the viola repertoire, a piece that blends lyrical beauty with complex technical and rhythmic challenges. It demands precision and emotional depth, making it both a joy and a test for any performer. This work has quickly become a standout piece for me as a violist, and the rapturous applause from the Clonmel audience reaffirmed its impact.
Playing alongside my incredible colleagues from Musici Ireland is always a privilege. Their dedication and artistry elevate every performance, and together, we bring a unique energy to this work. The excitement for our debut album, which will feature Earthrise and is set to be released on the Metier label later this year, is palpable. This recording will further solidify our commitment to expanding the repertoire for the viola and showcasing contemporary Irish composition on the global stage.
The Clonmel concert also highlighted the importance of live performance in connecting with audiences. The combination of a compelling contemporary work, a historic venue, and an engaged audience created a perfect storm of artistic expression. As we look forward to the album release, I’m filled with anticipation for how Earthrise will continue to resonate with listeners both in Ireland and beyond.
This concert was not just about performing a piece of music; it was about contributing to the living tradition of classical music and exploring new artistic horizons. I can't wait to see where this journey with Earthrise and Musici Ireland will take us next.
